My first C。J。 Box book was Back of Beyond and I loved it。 I liked the main character, Cody, and how the author keeps you guessing who the bad guy is。 But this next book about Cody was a huge disappointment。 It started off well, but I've never read a book where the main character is killed off halfway through the book。 I am not even going to finish reading it。 And I will not read any more of C。 J。 Box's books as i had planned because I can not trust the author。

I read Back from Beyond and this book due to the TV show Big Sky- that I am totally hooked on。 I usually find the books to be better than the shows or movies, but in this case not so。 The book and movie are different。 So excited to see the end of the show

Shockingly good, but read them in order。

One of my favorite CJ Box books。 I'm so glad I read it before the series (Big Sky) came on television。 Big thumbs up !!! One of my favorite CJ Box books。 I'm so glad I read it before the series (Big Sky) came on television。 Big thumbs up !!! 。。。more

2nd book in the Highway Quartet。 I was skeptical after the first book but the author redeemed himself with this stunning novel, which deserved the Edgar Award。 I was critical of Cody Hoyt in my review of the first novel, now I feel kinda bad about it。

Wanted to get it read before the series started on ABC。 Shouldn’t have cared。 Nothing like the book。 I am going to stick to Joe Picket!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow! I don't know if killing off main characters is now a trend, or if GRRM is just inspiring people to take a gamble。 Cody was not really a likeable character, but he was a pretty realistic one。 I am sad he won't have a redemption story。 I am on the fence about continuing the series, but C。 J。 Box writes a good thriller/mystery, so even if I don't continue this series I will definitely be picking up more of his books。 Wow! Read because of the new TV show based on it and wow what a book。 Based primarily on some real nasty men who kidnap and brutalize young women, mostly prostitutes from lonely truck stops。 They make a mistake however when they abduct two teenagers traveling alone。

Big CJ Box fan but the show Big Sky that just started on ABC had me looking for this series。 I already read 2 of the books。

All I am going to say is, Danielle and Gracie always find themselves in perplexed situations。 First, it was Yellowstone and the serial killer that was the trail with them that almost got them killed。 Now, close to Yellowstone, except this time garnered the attention of a lunatic truck driver, a rouge and dirty cop, and a bartender with bad teeth who all killed prostitutes for pleasure。 Gracie being the youngest was the smarter one by a long shot。 Ted Sullivan has to be one of the worst dad’s in All I am going to say is, Danielle and Gracie always find themselves in perplexed situations。 First, it was Yellowstone and the serial killer that was the trail with them that almost got them killed。 Now, close to Yellowstone, except this time garnered the attention of a lunatic truck driver, a rouge and dirty cop, and a bartender with bad teeth who all killed prostitutes for pleasure。 Gracie being the youngest was the smarter one by a long shot。 Ted Sullivan has to be one of the worst dad’s in history though, good God。 I found it interesting that all these events happened in a span of four days。 No case is ever solved that fast。 If so, it’s a rarity。 Everything happened so fast。 Also, it was hard for me to relate to Cassie because of what she did to Cody。 He was stuck in his own ways, but he was a good cop that saved lives and put away bad guys。 I guess her inexperience and not wanting to mess up considering she was the new girl on the job played a role in that。 It’s unfortunate that she evidently played a role in Cody’s death, a small one, but a role, nonetheless。 With that said, you can see a lot of Cody in her in regards to what he taught her and showed her over their partnership。 Her character developed a lot from beginning to end。 Hope she becomes Sheriff。 Sucks that Cody died。 I thought so much could be done with his character, but I get without him, Cassie Dewell’s story was made and able to blossom without being in his shadow。 The Lizard King was the perfect antagonist overall, but Rick Legerski was the perfect antagonist to Cassie。 A fellow law man who is old school and stubborn, stuck in how things “used” to be。 Kind of changing of the guard in a way。 Fantastic read。 Loved it。 Hard to put down。 Now that I am done with, “Three Weeks To Say Goodbye,” “Back Of Beyond,” and now, “The Highway,” I’m ready to watch, “Big Sky。” Hope it’s as good as the book。 Just hope it has a better ending。“WWCD” - What would Cody Do! 。。。more

This book was a huge letdown。 Box had on his hands a potential Jack Reacher-type character, except with flaws and depth。 I was pumped for it。 Then came a plot twist midway through the book that was so bad it caused me to put the book down and swear off CJ Box。 Now, about four years later, someone recommended the Joe Pickett series to me。 I'll give it a try。 This book was a huge letdown。 Box had on his hands a potential Jack Reacher-type character, except with flaws and depth。 I was pumped for it。 Then came a plot twist midway through the book that was so bad it caused me to put the book down and swear off CJ Box。 Now, about four years later, someone recommended the Joe Pickett series to me。 I'll give it a try。 。。。more

I read this one a while ago, and liked it。 Since then, I've read the next two books in the Cassie Dewell series, and I'm watching the "Big Sky" tv series now。 So, I decided to reread this book。 It holds up well after a second reading。 I read this one a while ago, and liked it。 Since then, I've read the next two books in the Cassie Dewell series, and I'm watching the "Big Sky" tv series now。 So, I decided to reread this book。 It holds up well after a second reading。 。。。more

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would。 It was thrilling and entertaining。 While the subject matter can be done very wrongly, I think this book does it in a way that many can appreciate。 There are some twist and turns。 I did wish that I could slap one of the characters, but there is no satisfying resolution to them。 Over all, I really liked it。

Another quick read from Box!

Never disappointed The Highway keeps the pages turning from beginning to end。 Being a Wyoming native, means Montana feels a little like home。 The accuracy of places and situations common among these parts is impeccable。 The story has some shocking moments that make you stop and think。。。 did that just happen?😳 C。J。 Box has perfected the mystery and suspense genre and I can hardly wait to read the next book!

This novel was very dark and scary。 The TV show Big Sky is based on this book。 The TV show has made some changes from the book particularly to Cassie Dewell and Jenny Hoyt's profession and relationship as well as the relationship between Ronald and his mother。 Given the way the book ended I will definitely read the sequel Paradise Valley。 I also want to read Back of the Beyond which introduces both Cody Hoyt and the Sullivan sisters。 This novel was very dark and scary。 The TV show Big Sky is based on this book。 The TV show has made some changes from the book particularly to Cassie Dewell and Jenny Hoyt's profession and relationship as well as the relationship between Ronald and his mother。 Given the way the book ended I will definitely read the sequel Paradise Valley。 I also want to read Back of the Beyond which introduces both Cody Hoyt and the Sullivan sisters。 。。。more

I may be in the minority, but I think this book is brilliant。 The element of surprise was a large part of my enjoyment, so I am going to say very little about the plot。 What C。J。 Box does to ratchet up the tension on the highway is pitch perfect。 There are some hateful characters in this book。 Evil is out there and it could be right in the next lane。 Listening to this book reminds us all to travel smart and encourage the young women in our lives to do the same。 Cassie Dewell will have you rootin I may be in the minority, but I think this book is brilliant。 The element of surprise was a large part of my enjoyment, so I am going to say very little about the plot。 What C。J。 Box does to ratchet up the tension on the highway is pitch perfect。 There are some hateful characters in this book。 Evil is out there and it could be right in the next lane。 Listening to this book reminds us all to travel smart and encourage the young women in our lives to do the same。 Cassie Dewell will have you rooting for her。 Can she become the investigator she believes she can be。 Will she come to appreciate her partner, Cody Hoyt? This would work as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading 'Back of Beyond' first。 If you are like me and love books set in the west, you will not be sorry。 Yellowstone shines as a character all her own。 。。。more

You don’t need to read the first book, you can jump right in on this one without missing a beat。 If you are watching Big Sky, this follows the series。 Obviously they made some character changes for TV, but the story and feel are close。

Started this book so I could watch the show。 A good thrilling book and loved the dynamic of the characters。 Wasn’t an all time favorite but a good book。

First off, I LOVE C。J。 Box's Joe Picket series。 It's literally my favorite。 Based on my appreciation of that series I bought Back of the Beyond and The Highway without a second thought。 I enjoyed Back of the Beyond but didn't love it。 I thought I'd give the series a second chance by reading The Highway。 This book is HORRIFYINGLY DISTURBING。 I tried to read it in the car while on a road trip on I-80。 I literally had to put the book down not due to car sickness but due to the graphic and realistic First off, I LOVE C。J。 Box's Joe Picket series。 It's literally my favorite。 Based on my appreciation of that series I bought Back of the Beyond and The Highway without a second thought。 I enjoyed Back of the Beyond but didn't love it。 I thought I'd give the series a second chance by reading The Highway。 This book is HORRIFYINGLY DISTURBING。 I tried to read it in the car while on a road trip on I-80。 I literally had to put the book down not due to car sickness but due to the graphic and realistic nature of this book。 The book follows the trail of a trucker turned serial killer。 It was too much, too disgusting, too real, too horrible。 I picked it back up a year later when I was in need of something to read。 Again it was absolutely disgusting。 I did finish it though I had to put it down many times。 I then tried to read the third book in the series and again put it down after the first 25% of the book and have not picked it back up for 10 months。 This series is MUCH darker than his other novels。 There is now a show based in the series called "Big Sky" the characters are obviously altered quite a bit but in general the show is not nearly as dark, graphic, or disturbing as the novel。If you enjoy really dark, twisted, graphic, and disturbing thrillers you will enjoy this series。 That's not my genre so therefore my rating is low。 。。。more

I have read some of the Joe Pickett series from CJ Box, but never the Highway series。 Thought I'd start with this one as I have just seen the 1st episode of Big Sky on TV, which is based mostly on this novel, and was shocked by the very surprising ending at the end of this episode (fellow viewers/readers know what I mean)。 Consequently, I got the book to see if it had the same ending, which it does, but occurring halfway through the novel。 The rest of the book deals with the resolution of the my I have read some of the Joe Pickett series from CJ Box, but never the Highway series。 Thought I'd start with this one as I have just seen the 1st episode of Big Sky on TV, which is based mostly on this novel, and was shocked by the very surprising ending at the end of this episode (fellow viewers/readers know what I mean)。 Consequently, I got the book to see if it had the same ending, which it does, but occurring halfway through the novel。 The rest of the book deals with the resolution of the mystery, which takes 9 tv episodes to conclude。 As these haven't aired yet I am curious about this, but suspect that the producers are bringing in storylines from the other series books to fill out the season。All that said, I enjoyed this fast-moving thriller, even suspecting the story-changing event to which I refer to above。 The book is darker than any of the Joe Pickett novels I have read (and I haven't read them all) and I suspect the series is much the same。 Nonetheless, I intend to finish watching the tv series and carry on with the remaining 2 or 3 novels in the book series。 A great strong character in Cassie, the investigator, and I am curious to find out how her character develops over both series。 Recommended。 。。。more
